Bude Canal
Bude boasts the only canal
lock and sea gate to the open
ocean in Britain. The Canal
was originally constructed to
transport the lime rich sea
sand to farms in the area for
fertiliser. The sea lock of the
canal as a depth of 10-15 feet
depending on the tide and is
the only working lock gate that
opens to the sea in Britain.
Ships brought cargo's of
limestone, coal and other
goods that were stored on the
upper wharf in the Petherick
Building, which has long since
gone. The remains of one of
the lime kilns on the wharf is
still visible, as is a foundry and
a timber mill which have now
been converted into housing.
Boat building and repairs also
took place around here and
vessels travelled to and fro via
the sea locks, inland up the
canal past "Falcon Bridge",
formerly a swing bridge that as
since been replaced.
