BUDE CANAL

FANCY A DIP Bude sea pool offers a safe haven for children young and old, who are not so sure about braving the Atlantic. With a depth of over 2 metres, it offers a wave free environment for you to enjoy. The sea pool is a combination of man and nature coming together. Part naturally occuring and part man made. The pool is purged twice a day by the tide. Bude sea pool is of reasonable dimension being 91 at is longest and 45m at its widest. The bude sea pool can be used all year if you are brave enough, but it is still warm enough in October for a quick dip.

BUDE CANAL Bude boasts the only canal lock and sea gate to the open ocean in Britain. The Canal was originally constructed to transport the lime rich sea sand to farms in the area for fertiliser. The sea lock of the canal as a depth of 10-15 feet depending on the tide and is the only working lock gate that opens to the sea in Britain. Ships brought cargo's of limestone, coal and other goods that were stored on the upper wharf in the Petherick Building, which has long since gone. The remains of one of the lime kilns on the wharf is still visible, as is a foundry and a timber mill which have now been converted into housing. Boat building and repairs also took place around here and vessels travelled to and fro via the sea locks, inland up the canal past "Falcon Bridge", formerly a swing bridge that as since been replaced.
